Realms - What is a Realm?

There are an infinite number of realms. Each of these realms represents a concept, usually a physical one but not always. Examples include:

• Realm of Fire
  
• Realm of Balance
  
• Realm of Light
  
• Realm of Death
  
• Realm of the Void
  
• Ultima, Realm of Magic
  

For untold amounts of time (at least, according to our perception: only two realms have "time" as we perceive it) these realms all remained disconnected from each other. This was good, since these realms are all so vastly different that there would be conflict if certain realms came into contact with each other.

The beings that exist in these realms are beyond imagination, for each exists in an environment composed completely of a single substance or energy depending on the realm, unlike our own realm that is made of many elements and energies.

Unlike the other realms, one realm was there at the Beginning. One realm came into being much later (again, to our perception; maybe to other realms it seemed like it was always there). This Realm was somehow connected to every other realm, their power slowly bleeding into this new realm, giving it a form unlike any other. This realm would be named the Universal Realm.

The Universal Realm is known by many names, including the Multiverse and the Macrocosm. This realm is notable to us, for this is the realm that contains earth; all of them. Our planet, our system, our galaxy, our universe; they are all contained in the Universal Realm, the cosmopolitan heart of, well, everything.

The fact that we connect to all other realms has its benefits and disadvantages. As the hub realm, we are able to use magic, not just as it exists in Ultima, but magic that can be elemental in nature, or be able to control life and death, or control the mind or the body. We can build amazing machines and create marvelous inventions capable of these feats as well. Some have the power to do this through sheer will alone, by manipulating Shean energy.

Shean is what would be considered the signature energy of the Universal Realm. It has been known as the Force and the Tao as well, amongst other names.

Shean is an energy that cannot be perceived through most methods, but as a part of our realm, we can all feel it to a certain extent. Those who can feel it and connect to it on a deep enough level can even manipulate it and use it to affect the world around them in a limitless number of ways. Shean energy is also limitless, or else can never be converted into other forms of energy, and so those that learn to harness it to empower their magic, technology, and natural form wield great power.

There is one who is said to be almost, if not actually 100% connected to Shean. This being has the power to manipulate all of the Universal Realm, and is well-known to the other realms, for he is the Universal Realm Master.

In each realm, there can be one being that is considered to be its absolute ruler, although whether that being chooses to rule as a king or queen, or simply leave the realm to its own devices and interfere only when deemed necessary, varies according to that being's whim. These beings are the most powerful and influential of their realm, and are known as Realm Masters.

A Realm Master is recognized by the realm itself as the most powerful force of the realm, and is granted the power of that realm's essence to enhance that power to unimaginable levels, to become a god of the gods themselves. If there is not a current Realm Master, then each realm has certain unknown requirements to be recognized by that realm and become the Realm Master. Otherwise, becoming the new Realm Master requires one task: to eliminate the current Realm Master.

Eliminating a Realm Master is almost impossible. Realm Masters carry in them the power of that realm itself, and can wipe out entire universes as though they were specks of dust. However, what makes eliminating a Realm Masters truly difficult is that the conditions of doing so are not always obvious. In many realms, the process requires simply (though nigh impossibly) killing the Realm Master, but in some, you only have to prove yourself stronger than the Realm Master in some way to do so. Some realms recognize the leader of a group that slays the Realm Master, and elevates that leader to the position; other realms are not satisfied by anything less than defeating the Realm Master on one's own. In a few rare cases, multiple people become Realm Masters of the same realm, the power of the realm split amongst them equally. Whatever the case, Realm Masters have only changed a handful of times across all realms.
